Student/Emerging Professionals Scholarships

The USGBC South Florida Chapter is pleased to announce the 2010 Emerging Professionals Scholarship Program.  This year, ten scholarships were awarded to local college students and young professionals (30 years old or younger) to allow them to enter the building industry or further their existing careers with recognition as LEED Accredited Professionals or Green Associates. meetingbox.gif

The USGBC South Florida Chapter gratefully acknowledges the two sponsors of this new scholarship program -- Dave Vernon and Resource
4 Floors, and Rob Hink and
The Spinnaker Group.

These scholarships will allow recipients to attend one of the LEED Technical Review Workshops offered by the South Florida Chapter in 2010.  The scholarships also will cover the cost of taking the LEED Accreditation Examination or the Green Associates Exan.  Through this scholarship program, young professionals earning the prestigious LEED AP credential will join the ranks of the most
progressive members of the building industry and will be able to offer employers a set of skills that is increasingly in demand.  The Green Associate designation will also put recipients on this path.  At the entry level, an employee oriented in the principles of green building will be a valuable and affordable asset to organizations seeking to transform their practices.

Scholarships are awarded based on the clarity of a letter of interest that explains the applicant’s understanding of sustainability and how he/she hopes to apply the principles of green building in their future work.  To review Scholarship Application ...

History of EP Support

In May 2005, the USGBC South Florida Chapter announced its first Emerging Green Builders Scholarship Program.  (The Emerging Green Builders Committee was the predecessor to today's Emerging Professionals Committee.)  The Scholarship Program was developed to support local college students and young professionals in their pursuit of training, study and testing to become LEED Accredited Professionals.  The first five scholarships were awarded in September 2005, and allowed recipients to attend the LEED-NC Intermediate Training Workshop, to study the LEED Technical Manual, and to pass the LEED Accreditation Exam.  Students completing the workshop and passing the examination to become LEED APs have since entered the workforce with these credentials and joined the ranks of the most progressive members of the building-industry professions.  Since that time and with the assistance of our sponsors, the Chapter has continued to award scholarships to students for LEED workshops hosted by the Chapter.  Indeed, without those companies and individuals who have stepped up to provide funding in a sustaining manner, the Chapter would be hard-pressed to maintain our level of financial support for these programs.

Film Series
Developed to increase the awareness of USGBC Student Groups and act as a catalyst to foster the relationship between universities/colleges and the Emerging Professionals Committee, the film series provides a keen educational session for students and young professionals.  Basically, the series introduces the topic of sustainable initiatives through hand-picked films.  The opportunity for networking and engaging conversation is also created throughout the series, and refreshments are served during these popular events.

How to LEED Series

This EP Committee series features up-close-and-personal, interactive discussions based on actual LEED projects, allowing young students and professionals access to the world of LEED in a practical, real-life sense.  The How to LEED Series brings to the forefront case studies in each category of the LEED rating system.  Through panel discussions, visual aids and site visits, attendees are able to learn details about LEED projects, as well as how LEED APs help building owners achieve performance goals and facilitate the LEED Certification process.  The reasons this series is wildly popular?  It is a well structured educational platform where LEED team members explain the integration of the LEED design and construction process.

Sponsorships
Though often facing budget limitations, the Chapter -- a nonprofit (501[c][3]) organization -- entertains throughout each fiscal period special requests to fund creative educational programs tied to universities and colleges.  For example, in February 2009, the Chapter co-sponsored the Tropical Vernacular Architecture Symposium at the University of Miami School of Architecture.
