Miami-Dade and the Keys Branch Meeting

  • 05:30 PM - 08:00 PM
  • University of Miami School of Architecture, Stanley and Jewell Glasgow Lecture Hall, 1223 Dickinson Drive Coral Gables, FL

Miami-Dade and the Keys
Branch Meeting -- Program:
Bamboo in a Green Design Environment

At every monthly Miami-Dade and the Keys Branch meeting, attendees encounter terrific opportunities to learn about the green building industry, and January's meeting is no exception.

Attendees are in for a real treat this month, as Nick Gunia, LEED AP, and President of Alterna Corp., will present a program titled "Bamboo in a Green Design Environment."  This program is registered with the AIA Continuing Education Systems for continuing professional education.  Credit earned on completion of this program will be reported to CES for AIA members.  Certificates of completion for non-AIA members will be available upon request.

After completion of this educational program on bamboo, participants will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of growing, harvesting and manufacturing with bamboo.
  • Recognize the process that contributes to a quality bamboo product.
  • Understand how bamboo from different manufacturers may contribute to a variety of LEED credits in a certified building.
  • Write CSI standard specifications to ensure the quality and sustainability of bamboo used in a project.

Nick, a longstanding leader in the South Florida green-building community and the Immediate-Past Chair of the MDK Branch, is President of Alterna Corp., the leading green building products supplier in the Southeast and the Caribbean.

Top-shelf education, delectable edibles, a terrific venue, and great fun -- what better way to spend a Wednesday evening!  Please come out and join in … and bring a friend!  The more you get involved with the Branch's activities, the greater the wealth of contacts, resources and information -- including particulars (e.g., workshops) tied to securing LEED accreditation -- that are available to you.

Our registration and meet-'n'-greet runs from 5:30-6:30pm.  From 6:30-7pm we conduct our general business meeting, and our educational presentation runs from 7-8pm.

Our Branch meetings are free to USGBC members, and non-members are charged a nominal $10 admission fee to help cover meeting costs.  To join the USGBC, click here or you can join at the meeting.

If you have any questions regarding the Miami-Dade and the Keys Branch or this month's meeting, or if would like to participate in future presentations, please contact Carole Schafmeister or Susie Glass.

We gratefully thank our wonderful sponsor for the January meeting ...
